Do you ever wonder “do I really need a birth photographer? I have an iPhone.” The sweet and simple is no, you don’t! I get it, a birth tog is not in everyone’s budget, but would you trust your wedding to be captured with a cell phone? Probably not! It’s a momentous moment in your life, and so is birth. Can you capture your birth without a professional, of course, but why would you want to?

In hospital or at home, a planned C-section or unmedicated water birth — however it happens, birth is remarkable! The day your child comes into the world, it changes everything. You feel the weight of their warm body against yours and kiss that damp, fuzzy head. Where words fail to capture the depth of this moment, an artful photograph preserves all the emotion of your first minutes together. You grew this baby. You birthed this baby. Birth photography provides evidence of your incredible strength — and you may need that reminder during the grueling newborn days ahead.

Some people fear that inviting a photographer into their birth space will disrupt the intimate connection between a birthing couple and their new baby. I find quite the opposite to be true. Hiring a birth photographer allows your partner to be completely present with you throughout labor and birth, and especially in those precious bonding moments after birth. Give your partner the gift of experiencing this day fully, without worrying about getting a good picture. A birthing mother deserves to be surrounded by people who know her, believe in her and support her in this vulnerable time. i am intimately acquainted both with the families i serve and also the birthing process itself. People hire me not just for photographs, but also for the calmness I bring to their birth experience. A good birth photographer knows when to offer words of reassurance, when to quietly hold space, and how to artfully tell the story of your birth as it unfolds. 

When you are in labour we naturally (if left unhindered) go into what is called labour land. This is a place where all of your hormones are making a concoction potion, so to speak. Oxytocin, testosterone, adrenaline, progesterone, endorphins….and heaps more to get you out of your logical brain. So you don’t have to think...you just do what feels good in that moment. This enables you to go deep inside of yourself and focus on your body and your baby. Making you less aware of the things that are going on around you. This is why we forget. We are biologically programmed to not remember. Not to protect us from the physical pain as mainstream society would say. But to help you birth your baby. This is the fight side of the fight or flight phenomenon. your birth story deserves to be remembered!

yES, I DO USE FLASH. I use it because you are paying me to deliver to you the best quality.  I shoot with flash because I can give you the best of my best. Now, obviously if you prefer not to have flash used, or someone on your team has epilepsy or a head injury, I will absolutely not use it. I will make light if there is no light. Not turning on entire light switches, but I may crack the adjoining rooms door, or light an extra candle or two if you have them. Any kind of extra ambient light helps tremendously.

I have asked feedback from my clients, their partners and midwives each time if the flash was bothersome, as I was trying to collect feedback on how the external flash affected them. each time my birth clients have one of two responses regarding their feelings on the external flash:
